How to Delete Dropbox Account?

To permanently delete your Dropbox account, you’ll need to follow these steps. Be absolutely sure you want to do this, as this action is irreversible and you will lose access to all your files. It’s highly recommended that you back up any important files before proceeding.

Here’s how to delete your Dropbox account:

Via the Dropbox Website (Recommended Method):

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com: Open a web browser and go to the Dropbox website. Log in with your email address and password.
  2. Click your avatar: In the bottom-left corner of the page, click on your profile picture or initials.
  3. Click “Settings”: In the top-right of the menu that appears, click the gear icon (Settings).
  4. Scroll down and click “Delete account”: On the General tab, scroll to the very bottom of the page. You should see a section labeled “Delete account” with a link that says “Delete account” next to “Delete my Dropbox”. Click this link.
  5. Confirm your password: You will be asked to re-enter your Dropbox password to confirm your identity. Type your password in the provided field.
  6. Select a reason for leaving (Optional): Dropbox may ask you to provide a reason for deleting your account. You can select a reason from the dropdown menu or skip this step.
  7. Click “Permanently delete”: Carefully read the warning message about the consequences of deleting your account. If you are sure you want to proceed, click the “Permanently delete” button.
  8. Final Confirmation: A final confirmation prompt will appear. Click “Delete” to permanently delete your account and all its data.

Via the Dropbox Mobile App (iOS Only for Basic Accounts):

  • Note: As of the latest information, deleting your account directly from the Android Dropbox app is not supported. You’ll need to use a web browser.
  1. Open the Dropbox app: On your iPhone or iPad, open the Dropbox mobile app.
  2. Tap “Account”: Tap the “Account” tab, usually located in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Tap “Settings”: Tap the gear icon (Settings) in the top-right corner.
  4. Scroll down and tap “Delete account”: Scroll down the settings menu and tap “Delete account”.
  5. Create a password if logged in with Google: If you initially logged in to Dropbox with your Google account, you’ll be prompted to create a dedicated Dropbox password. Tap “Send email”, follow the instructions in the email to create a password, and then return to the Dropbox mobile app.
  6. Enter your password: Type the password you use for your Dropbox account.
  7. Select a reason for leaving (Optional): Choose a reason for deleting your account.
  8. Tap “Delete account”: Tap the “Delete account” button.
  9. Confirm deletion: Tap “Delete” on the confirmation prompt.

Important Considerations Before Deleting:

  • Back up your files: Once your account is deleted, you will lose access to all your stored files, and they are not recoverable. Ensure you have downloaded everything you want to keep to your local devices or another cloud storage service.
  • Cancel your subscription: If you have a paid Dropbox subscription, you need to cancel your subscription first before you can delete your account. If you don’t cancel, you may continue to be billed even after deleting your account. You can usually cancel your subscription from the “Plan” or “Billing” section of your account settings on the Dropbox website or through the app store if you subscribed via your mobile device.
  • Shared folders: If you have files in shared folders, those files will still be accessible to other members of those folders. However, you will no longer be able to access or edit them.
  • Team accounts: If you are a member of a Dropbox Business team, you cannot delete your account yourself. You will need to contact your team administrator to have your account removed from the team. Team admins have different procedures for removing and deleting team member accounts.

What Happens When You Delete Your Account:

  • You will lose all access to your Dropbox account and its contents.
  • Your files and folders will be deleted from Dropbox servers permanently and will be non-recoverable.
  • You will be logged out of Dropbox on all your devices.
  • Your files will stop syncing on all your devices. Files that are already synced to your local devices will remain there but will no longer be connected to Dropbox.

Deleting your Dropbox account is a permanent action. Ensure you have taken all necessary precautions before proceeding. If you have any doubts, consider canceling your subscription and keeping your account inactive instead of deleting it.
