How to Remove Dropbox From Mac?

To remove Dropbox from your Mac, you’ll need to follow these steps to ensure it’s completely uninstalled:

Phase 1: Unlink Your Account (Important to Prevent Data Loss)

  1. Open Dropbox: Click the Dropbox icon in the menu bar (usually at the top right of your screen).  
  2. Open Preferences: Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) and select “Preferences…” from the dropdown menu.  
  3. Go to the “Account” tab: Click on the “Account” tab in the Preferences window.
  4. Unlink Dropbox: Click the “Unlink This Dropbox…” button.  
  5. Confirm: A confirmation window will appear. Click “Unlink” to confirm. This step disconnects your computer from your Dropbox account without deleting your files from the cloud.

Phase 2: Quit the Dropbox Application

  1. Click the Dropbox icon: Click the Dropbox icon in the menu bar again.
  2. Quit Dropbox: Click “Quit” from the dropdown menu. Ensure the Dropbox icon disappears from the menu bar before proceeding.

Phase 3: Move Dropbox Application to Trash

  1. Open Finder: Click the Finder icon in your Dock.
  2. Go to Applications: In the Finder sidebar, click “Applications”.  
  3. Locate Dropbox: Find the “Dropbox” application in the list.
  4. Move to Trash: Drag the “Dropbox” application icon to the Trash in your Dock. Alternatively, you can right-click (or Control-click) on the Dropbox icon and select “Move to Trash”.  
  5. Empty Trash: Right-click on the Trash icon in your Dock and select “Empty Trash” to permanently remove the application.

Phase 4: Remove Dropbox Service Files and Folders (Optional but Recommended for Complete Removal)

These steps will remove application-specific settings and support files.

  1. Open Finder: Click the Finder icon in your Dock.
  2. Go to Folder: In the Finder menu at the top of the screen, click “Go” and then select “Go to Folder…” (or press Shift-Command-G).  
  3. Enter Paths and Delete: Enter the following paths one by one into the “Go to Folder” dialog box and click “Go”. In each of these folders, look for any files or folders related to “Dropbox” or “DropboxHelperTools” and move them to the Trash.
    • ~/Library/Application Support/Dropbox
    • ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.dropbox.client
    • ~/Library/Caches/com.dropbox.DropboxMacUpdate
    • ~/Library/Containers/com.dropbox.finderext
    • ~/Library/Group Containers/com.dropbox.client
    • ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.dropbox.DropboxMacUpdate.agent.plist
    • /Library/DropboxHelperTools
    • ~/.dropbox (This is a hidden folder. Make sure to type the period . at the beginning)
  4. Empty Trash: Once you have moved all Dropbox-related files and folders to the Trash, right-click on the Trash icon in your Dock and select “Empty Trash”.  

Phase 5: Remove Dropbox from Finder Sidebar and Toolbar (Optional)

  • Finder Sidebar: If you see “Dropbox” in your Finder sidebar, right-click (or Control-click) on it and select “Remove from Sidebar”.
  • Finder Toolbar: If you have a Dropbox icon in your Finder toolbar, right-click on the toolbar, select “Customize Toolbar…”, and then drag the Dropbox icon off the toolbar to remove it. Click “Done”.
